Guided Fishing — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before your float: trip length, licenses, what to bring, weather, boats, and more.
How long do trips last?
Our full-day floats typically run 8 hours or more on the water. You’ll get plenty of time to fish and explore, so plan for a full day and come ready for an active, rewarding experience.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. Virginia residents and non-residents 16+ must carry a valid VA fishing license on all trips. Non-residents can purchase 1-day or 5-day licenses online.
Tip: Buy your license ahead of time so you’re ready to launch.
What gear should I bring?
Bring your favorite rod/reel if you’d like; your guide will look it over at the ramp. We also provide top-tier tackle and flies as needed. The river changes daily, so we match presentations to conditions.
What baits and flies are working?
We carry a full selection of proven baits and flies and adjust throughout the day. Expect a mix of subsurface and topwater options depending on flows, clarity, and season.
What boats do you use?
We primarily guide from self-bailing rafts with custom fishing frames and drop-stitch floors for stability — clean layouts ideal for both spin and fly anglers. Depending on water levels and conditions, we may use other craft.
What should I wear and pack?
Rain gear is a must year-round. Dress for the season and layer up in early spring and late fall (avoid cotton; choose nylon, wool, or fleece). Waterproof boots are great in cooler months; in summer, nylon pants or swim shorts and water sandals/old sneakers work well.
Always bring sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, any medications you need, and your lunch. We provide water & ice.
How’s the bite through the year?
Spring (Mar–May) and fall (Sep–early Nov) shine for experienced anglers and trophy hunts (long days and tougher weather possible). Late-May through early-September is friendly for all skill levels with more action and stable weather; fly fishing can be excellent.
Every day fishes differently — it’s fishing, not catching.
What’s for lunch?
Lunch isn’t included. Please pack your own. We supply water & ice.
Do you practice catch & release?
Yes. Our smallmouth trips are strictly Catch-Photo-Release. We’ll measure and photograph your fish so you go home with trophy memories (and a clean conscience).
When and where do we meet?
Please confirm meet time and location 2–3 days before your trip by phone or email. We guide the entire New River in Virginia (and sections of the James); your guide selects the best float based on conditions.
Weather & rain policy
We do fish in the rain. Bring proper layers and rain gear. Your guide monitors flows and weather and will adjust plans if conditions warrant.
GPS policy
Handheld GPS units are not allowed on our guided trips — no exceptions. We teach techniques and patterns, not coordinates.
Gratuities
A 15–20% gratuity is customary for a full-day guided trip.
Lost tackle or damaged gear
Compensation for lost/broken lures, damaged rods/reels, or raft damage is at your guide’s discretion. Please be respectful with borrowed gear.
